Burnt Umber

March 30, 2015

Untitled-2A few days ago someone asked me what colour my trousers were, without trying to have a look-how-much-I-know attitude I immediately replied, “I think it’s a burnt umber.” Now, I only know about this colour because of studying art throughout high school and taking up a few art history courses at uni. Plus, I don’t even know if I’m correct – burnt umber just felt like the right thing to say. Wrong or right, it reminded me of my high school days.

Throughout my matric year, I often experienced major creative blocks. Sitting in a studio for hours with nothing to show of my time might just be one of the most frustrating things. Lately, I have been experiencing these blocks. I guess my mind is so preoccupied with my studies that I haven’t really opened it up to soaking in some inspiration. Students are always told to find a balance between their studies, relationships, exercise and leisure time. But this is something I have never been very good at.  Since I was young I have let my studies take over most of my time, but this year I plan to conquer the skill of finding the balance. So, I have decided to promise myself that every month I will go somewhere new because you never know when inspiration may stare you in the face. Do you guys have any more tips for me to get over my creative block?
