At the age of three, I knew what I wanted when it came to fashion. I never let anyone dress me. Unsurprisingly, my choices have not always been ones to brag about. At five, I went through a disney gangster stage and four years later, gelled back hair was all the rage. Ah, memories. Needless to say, from a young age, fashion has been something of great interest to me and my mom has always left me to my own devices. So, I think it’s about time I celebrate her and her influence in my style – especially with Mother’s Day around the corner.
While my mom completely let me define my own style, throughout the years she has inspired me extensively – both through her style and through her advice. My mom is the type to have one signature handbag, pair of sunglasses and lipstick colour for years on end. And every year, without fail, her signature pieces work. That’s what classic, timeless pieces do. My love for collared shirts, structured jackets and leather boots are all inspired by my mother dearest.
More than anything though, my mom has instilled in me a habit for which I will forever be thankful – quality control. It is constantly at work in my mind: when I’m watching a fashion show, reading through an editorial or shopping. Is there a job by the title, quality controller? Because I want it.
My style, #ItAllStartedWithMom. Like Sunglass Hut says, “Before fashion bloggers and street-style stars, fashion cues and inspiration were taken from moms.” To celebrate my first style icon, and treat myself in the process, my mom and I were pampered by Sunglass Hut and now have a shoot to add to the albums. You too can pamper your mom this Mother’s Day – Sunglass Hut is giving away a R500 voucher for one of my readers. What do you have to do to win? Tweet myself, @JessVanWyk and @SunglassHutSA, with how your mom has influenced your style and include the hashtag #ItAllStartedWithMom. I would also love to see you share some vintage pictures of your first style icon, your mom, and her style in the tweet.
